The week in review

I am still waiting to get my camera returned...the reason no photos are being posted... a situation which will be corrected soon. :o)

The kids are excited for the long 4 day weekend. WE do not have school Friday or Monday because of built in Hurricane days (snow days for my up north friends to relate)

This weekend is the semi annual PWS Florida association conference occurring in ORLANDO-DOWNTOWN DISNEY! The association has grants and have offered our hotel paid to make it an affordable conference to bring the kids for the weekend. A LONG AWAITED VACATION! The kids wanted to go to Animal Kingdom but we are going in June for a week, we will go check on Tressa's star this trip and have a great day at GIVE KIDS THE WORLD.

I am now going through the orientation/trainings, etc... to be a Brownie Girl Scout leader. It is very exciting to be using my creative side for something which Tressa is totally excited about. Kaitlyn will be my Cadette Girl scout assistant to the troop and earn Cadette patches for her efforts. I am using my thrift store skills to find Brownie uniform pieces for fifty cents to a dollar--turning around and selling for five dollar donations to the troop..we need to build funds to make the troop active right away. So many ideas I have.

This week also brought a grant into PODS Angels (Cape Coral Families) to have respite again.. A great week indeed! It gives me a lot to focus on which is always where I thrive... "BUSY"

I have been contacted to begin the hopes of another successful Holiday party here in Cape Coral for families raising children with disabilities and having hard times. I feel revived!!! The excitement of the holidays are here. The house is decorated for Halloween right now and will transform to Thanksgiving the days following our Trick or Treat party. Many will gather at our home on the 31st for a growling time.

I am trying to figure a good time to get up North to visit my birth family whom I have not seen in 20 years + .... Many classmates and all I left in 1988 to move down here.

Today I went to the kids school for an IEP on Lucas..my team with the kids best interest at heart so no stress.. While I entered the school Jordan was being escorted to the Principles office (I was informed by the office staff.) I sat quietly so the staff could continue without my interference... I look up and a photo crew are taking pictures of Jordan and the Principle who wears a tie to school every day, just like Jordan!! Jordan with his brand new Winnie the pool, Tigger and Eeyore tie.. Our schools motto is positive reinforced only.. It is working! After school I took Jordan to the thrift shop and he picked out two more ties. One of Donald Duck which is very cool and the other says I LOVE YOU MAN! all over it very bold with the exclamation point at the tip... He has chosen that for tomorrow. It is a riot. The thrift store staff are holding Disney ties behind the corner for him..... It is all positive!

I am sure tomorrow with an 8:30 appt, Emma for 6 mos shots at 11, an IEP at noon and my first aide class at 5:30 I am not sure I will be on the computer...maybe not on this blog until Tuesday the next several days are going to be a blurrrrrr..so much to do with the kids.

Monday we return, the kids prepare to go back to school Tuesday..
Tuesday Emma has an MRI, two kids have dentist appointments and Tressa has a shoe fitting. Wed. Two for ear rechecks at the specialist so if clear audiology tests and then hair cuts, Thursday some brain test at Healthpark for Emma, and something more and something after that...then ESE advisory that night.

Newborn Girl with Down syndrome needs a family

"Baby was born on 9/15/09. Birth weight was 8 lbs. 9oz, height 20 1/2 inches in length. Apgars were 6 and 8. She has a heart murmur that comes and goes. Sometimes is is very pronounced and others it is not. Tuesday she is being transported to another local hospital for a full cardiac evaluation (including echocardiogram) . Genetic testing for Down's Syndrome was done on 9/16/09 and will take approximately 14 days for results. According to the pediatricians they would shocked if she does not have Down Syndrome. Baby is off all monitors and has no IV. Initially she was slow to latch on to nipple but those feeding issues have been resolved and she is feeding much better. According to the nurse she is eating like a champ."

Contact for agency (Adoptions from the Heart) Stephanie Capriotti her e-mail address is StephanieC @ afth . org She is also on call this weekend so you can reach her by calling 800 355-5500.

Verbal praise

Positive reinforcements WORK!

Jordan has been interested in wearing a tie to school almost every day since school has started. I was not prepared with a wardrobe to meet his desire but in watching his point sheets it has come clear I need to get shopping. When he wears a tie to school, has has STAR days. Friday we did not have a clean collar shirt and he wore shorts and t-shirt...NOT A GOOD DAY..

This week Monday and today both star days, both days he has worn a tie. He is too cute in his BUSINESS attire. Dress for Success... people notice and make positive remarks to him.

I am stopping at all the GOODWILL Stores and run into look at their tie selection 99 cents each. Last week I found a tie full of $1,0000.00 bills, his favorite. It was not a clip on tie and really not for kids.. He wore it yesterday and came home with 100% on his behavioral sheet.. PERFECT DAY. I saw that the tie was in place, and had a couple spots on it. I asked him if he got a little lunch on his tie...His response "No, just some pee" LOL He proceeded to tell me "I peed on my tie 2 times" LOL too funny. The men's ties are about 3 to 4 inches longer than the boys ties so when he goes to the bathroom the end is too long, gets in the way.

Today, I hit a GOODWILL and found five very cool ties. One has BEARS, one has FISH and some plain ones because he has plaid shirts which solid ties will work with.. He loves wearing ties; his campus life is "like being a teacher" he says.

Ryan needs a family, newborn w/Down syndrome

http://www.spence-chapin.org/adoption-programs/b2b_waiting_children.php?id=20

Ryan, an adorable Caucasian baby boy, continues to wait to go home to his forever family. He was born at the end of July and was diagnosed with Down syndrome (Trisomy 21). At birth he weighed 6 lbs. and was 18 ¾ inches long. He is being followed for two cardiac issues, a PDA and an ASD. His cardiologist is hopeful that these will resolve without intervention but there is no certainty. Ryan will, therefore, need to be followed by a cardiologist when he is home. When last examined on August 28, 2009, Ryan was found to be thriving. His weight was 7lbs 9oz and his height was 20 inches. His interim care mother reports that he is a sweet, alert and responsive baby who brings joy to all who meet him.

Ryan’s home state of New Jersey will provide adoption subsidy assistance for him only to New Jersey families. Many other states however, including New York and Connecticut, will provide ongoing adoption subsidy to children with Down syndrome who are placed with adoptive families in their state. We suggest that families contact their home study agency to ascertain whether their state does provide adoption subsidy assistance.

Ryan’s birth parents are a married couple raising Ryan’s full sibling. They would like to stay in contact with Ryan’s adoptive family out of love for Ryan and also because of the importance of the siblings knowing each other. They would like his forever family to include an at home parent and to have 5 or fewer children.

We ask families interested in pursuing an adoption plan for Ryan to complete an ASAP client pre-application form and forward their current home study to the ASAP department. Home Studies can be emailed to ASAP@spence-chapin.org, faxed to the ASAP department at (212) 360-0282 or mailed to ASAP at Spence-Chapin Services, 410 East 92nd Street, New York, N.Y. 10128.

My morning consisted of a HUGE pizza, soda, cake and ice cream all before 6:30 am.. thank goodness it was all pretend. Jordan delivered a make believe Birthday party with candles on a cake... He turned off the lights and had me make a wish and blow out candles...sang Happy Birthday to Mom and we discussed who can know it is my birthday (EVERYBODY) as long as they remember to tell them that I am 29...TWENTY NINE YEARS OLD TODAY!! Yes, it seems odd since I have a 30 year old but hey I blew out all the pretend candles so my wish came true...LOL

Emma ate early and is asleep, Steven and Kaitlyn are out having their breakfast independently and I a laying in bed watching the news realizing life at our house is not so bad...... many people out there are having it much worse.

THANK YOU ALL ON FACEBOOK AND PERSONAL EMAILS/ECARDS SAYING HAPPY BIRTHDAY....... It feels great knowing you all took the time to think of me during my Birthday celebration..

My last day being 48

It was an uneventful Sunday here. We got up ate breakfast, played in the pool, played some games, lunch with friends, quick trip to Ft Myers and therapy all afternoon. We had a nice quiet dinner, then an evening reading stories and their bedtime routine.

Jordan hopped out of bed at 8 pm (had not slept yet) went to the front door got his clothes for school, got dressed, looked out the door FOR THE BUS??? I told him over and over not to get in his school clothes but he was sure it was morning and was showing me the hands on the clock we look at in the morning... it was odd...After about 15 minutes he started back with his bedtime routine again (Shower/teeth/PJ's) I let him go and now he is in bed going to sleep????? Brain gas????

Tomorrow I meet 49..... a great year ahead!

A rainy Saturday

The morning started early...THE PHONE. A kids line that needs some rules attached to it, woke me up throughout the night. Emma is back to getting a middle of the night feeding since school started because she is asleep by 9 pm, so additional interruptions to my sleep. All part of my round the clock parenting. When Nancy or Gail spend the night they are amazed to the amount of parenting that is required through out the night...I have a couple owls here, LOL.

Keirsten has made the move to being interested in BOYS, High School for her is a more grown up environment; she is sorting through the new attention...SIZE 0 and a very pretty girl. This year sh is without her crisis driven drama friends to feed off of all day. She is finding the attention from some real man whores... SORRY GUYS! The football players using just that..Jock on campus trying to get the pretty freshman..Well Mama is on top of their game! I am watching the IM and have a 3rd phone in my room to pick up and listen on mute at any time I choose... Keirsten is "talking smart" for the most part. The boys are just gross! I took over one IM when some jock went to talk about sex....I simply typed, NEVER EMAIL OR IM ME EVER AGAIN! and cut him off her IM friends.... she said he didn't talk to her at school yesterday.. she couldn't believe it was that simple.

Kaitlyn is struggling with a bad ear infection, her ears are draining and smell awful. I will get her to the specialist again to figure this out. She is deaf in one ear and when the good one is infected it makes her hearing null. She loves school. She loves being home more as she has a real live doll to play with and sh loves it. Taking newborns until the 4-ever family comes is like getting a new doll baby to play with and she gets excited to help as my little mommy.

Steven is working hard in middle school, it isn't the most favorite thing for him, he just loves to play...I talk to him about coloring on his school papers as not acceptable The social studies now has maps which everyone colors with colored pencils..HE IS A HAPPY BOY! He is talking more and more...Today he will be lost if it doesn't stop raining. The pool is his favorite activity.

Jordan is active this morning, first question was "SCHOOL?" I said no school it is Saturday, he ran to the door to let me know it is raining at about 7 am. Then to the TV room for Jurassic Park. I showed him Saturday morning cartoons but he wanted no part of them.

Tressa is in the bath, it appears she has been up watching TV most of the night.. she loves to play in the tub, sings, makes bubbles swims and just has her personal time. Tressa has had a challenging first few weeks of school adjusting to new people in charge... She has a new paraprofessional this year and tried to take control .. You see this women can not do stairs and has to use the elevator. Tressa realized if she does a flop to the floor this woman can not get her up so when the elevator door opened Tressa flopped to the floor leaving this woman in a bad spot.. Thank goodness another teacher saw/heard the commotion. She got Tressa out and now Tressa can not go into the elevator although this puts a burden on staff because one teacher has to leave their class as the para covers so Tressa can be supervised going up and down the stairs... Then she turned over her desk, dumped a shelf and got a bit aggressive in the classroom hoping to get out for a walk...last years pay off for this behavior.. This year the teacher explained to her that no one is being called, that you are going no where and in time you will need to clean up all the things your have dumped over before you go to lunch... Tressa sat on the floor hoping for attention and the teacher returned to instructing the class as Tressa bright eyed in shock stared at her...in about 15 minutes Tressa put very thing back together, sat in her seat and seemed pleased with the big smile she got in the end from her teacher after she was sitting at her desk doing he morning work. This teacher is in contact with me and has my support 100%..she stated Tressa is a lot of work, but she just loves her!

Lucas is sitting on his bed watching Disney with a big smile and has his Tigger piano on his lap...

as I have been typing this Emma is laying next to me playing on my bed with her activity bear having her morning BM which has taken over the sell of my room...

off to change Emma then to the kitchen for breakfast of champions... I hear

"Mom, I am hungry"

Weekend for family time

It has been a slight change in plans this weekend.. The trip to get the baby was canceled. The day became very productive for things that have needed to get done.

Mandie was the guide to getting the cable man to get the house back on line, cable working in all the rooms, cords back in place and a kids line on ... Then 6 hours with the wireless company on the phone to get the box up and running house wide... AAAwwweee it is so nice to be on my comfy bed surrounded by pillows watching the news and typing on my blog..... YOU HAVE NO IDEA!

Connie came over to help and lent me her mower which I LOVE because it has power driven wheels...MUCH EASIER...our lawn was more like a Forrest...So much rain, and my mower not running for weeks it was a feat.

I have to tell you that Kaitlyn was home today with me, she was going to the hospital with me but then...she took a Mommy and me day. When the cable man was in the house she was in her room watching a movie on Mandie's ipod. It was so cool that when she came out for lunch and is in the dining area alone eating and a man walked through our home (she was unaware he had been here) She clearly states: HEY WHO ARE YOU WHY ARE YOU IN MY HOUSE! He was taken back and headed out the front door, I rushed to her and said GOOD GIRL, he is the cable man here to fix the TV's ...She asks why was he messing with our shelf? (computer area)

Emma is calling.....

GENERAL INFORMATION
Erb's Palsy (Erb-Duchenne Palsy) is a paralysis of the arm caused by injury to the upper group of the arm's main nerves (specifically, spinal roots C5-C7), almost always occurring during birth. Depending on the nature of the damage, the paralysis can either resolve on its own over a period of months, necessitate physical therapy or require surgery
TREATMENT
Some babies recover on their own; however, some may require specialist intervention.

Neonatal / pediatric neurosurgery is often required for avulsion fracture repair. Lesions may heal over time and function return. Physio therapeutic care is often required to regain muscle usage.

Although range of motion is recovered in many children under one year in age, individuals who have not yet healed after this point will rarely gain full function in their arm and may develop arthritis.

The three most common treatments from Erb's Palsy are: Nerve transfers (usually from the opposite leg), Sub Scapularis releases and Latissimus Dorsi Tendon Transfers.

The nerve transplants are usually performed on babies under the age of 9 months since the fast development of younger babies increases the effectiveness of the procedure. They are not usually carried out on patients older than this because, although small babies nerves can recover to an extent, when the procedure is done on older infants, more harm than good is done and can result in nerve damage in the area where the nerves were taken from. Scarring can vary from faint scars along the lines of the neck to full "T" shapes across the whole shoulder depending on the training of the surgeon and the nature of the transplant.

Subscapularis releases, however, are not time limited. Since it is merely cutting a "Z" shape into the subscapularis muscle to provide stretch within the arm, it can be carried out at almost any age and can be carried out repeatedly on the same arm, however this will compromise the integrity on the muscle.

The Latissimus Dorsi Tendon Transfers involve cutting the Latissimus Dorsi in half horizontally in order to 'pull' part of the muscle around and attach it to the outside of the biceps. This procedure provides external rotation to varying degrees of success. A side effect of this may be increased sensitivity on the part of the biceps where the muscle will now lie since the Latissimus Dorsi has roughly twice the amount of nerve endings per square inch than other muscles.

Called the Bus barn........

They got their pick up time switched from 7:36 am to 8:52 am so they did not have to be on the bus so long...Just what I wanted...the kids forgot to give me the new slip..........................URG!

Kids are still waiting.....

Kaitlyn is getting impatient.....sh is walking to look down the side roads....

Kaitlyn and Steven still waiting..hmmm

Gosh, I hope the bus comes for them......

Facing tough love

I had the funniest experience this morning.... I heard a rat or something in the Attic the other day so while checking I had palm trees laying on my roof. I cut back the trees so that no palm franz were touching the roof and took rat bait to the Attic. Seemed logical.

This morning as all the kids have departed to school, Kaitlyn and Steven sitting on the driveway waiting for their bus because I have no idea when it is due to arrive these days...Emma back to sleep; it is dead silent in my house....I am having coffee reading emails when I hear this noise... I listen and it seems to be in my house???? My first thought is OMG I need to be sure Emma is safe..A RAT... so I proceed to get Emma, locate a baseball bat and have my cell phone in my hand, I LOOKED RIDICULES!!!!!! We are slowly searching for a rat in the house to try and scare it out a door.... All this DRAMA....... I must say I am not as brave as I once thought I might be..... The noise is coming from the TV room...as we slowly walk closer it is not making noise...A NOISE.... there it is..not a rat after all.... I forgot about the darn box turtle Mandie got the kids a couple of weeks ago...he is rearranging his house and neighborhood...LOL I took Emma back to bed, sitting here I have to laugh!
Kaitlyn and Steven are still sitting on the driveway, once Emma wakes up we will go get some more rat bait just in case...I would not want to really be face to face with a rat.

No pictures on here for a few days.... I hate to admit my adult kids are not making good life choices and consequences are severe. My boys have struggled with drug addictions for years. Kory has gotten on the other side of his but as the other day proved Josh is far from being on the other side of his. REWIND--- three weeks ago Josh got a settlement from a car accident. The money went VERY FAST with the purchase of an SUV 4X4 (used) which he has since sold and says he lost only $100.00 although the day before he moved north he was penniless and hungry..How can that be when he had thousands three weeks ago... He did show up at my house obviously stoned a couple days ago, he acted strange and was going through the house to collect his things to move... Well he took my camera which is now in a pawn shop and I need to locate which one and buy my camera back.... DRUGS ARE BAD! Tough love is going to happen with this boy! Enough is enough! I have had enough! Not even angry, just have had enough. Won't be so easy to walk through my house again ..... not until proven change...

Mongoloid

I am stunned that this is still being used in America in the year 2009 as a descriptive of a person having Down syndrome. I am even more disgusted that a professional who claims to be serving the best interest of our children, "PROFESSIONALLY".

Today a school board representative called our kids mongoloids...said she had someone a year ago talk to her about "person fist language" but she said it is hard to remember....WHAT???? We need to pay attention to these moments during re-elections!!!

What I took from today IEP

This was my first HIGH SCHOOL IEP; at least that I was involved in...

What I took from it was this....

I need to be sure that my children are getting EVERYTHING academically possible while they are in elementary school and keep them in that environment for as many years as possible. My kids can stay in public school up to their 22nd birthday and I will be working hard to strategically pace the kids so they get the most academic time early... IT IS VERY IMPORTANT.
Thursday
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR!!!!!
I have a meeting across town at 9 am and the bus has not made it to the house....8:30am...Oh NO, why do they listen to me??????
I call the school and tell them I will be bringing in the two kids, we can not wait any longer. I pick up Connie and Jessica and off we go. Jessica is going back to school... YIPEE. I connect with the ESE head teacher at the middle school and I learn that my sweet Kaitlyn has been struggling with BREAKFAST at school. She insists she needs to eat breakfast but the bus only allows her about 10 minutes to grab/eat/get to class. The bell rings and she acts like she is having Sunday Brunch at the mall.... The assistant suggests she hustle up the bell has rung and she is late for 1st period...OFF SHE GOES.... No, she does not stop eating and head for class...she in no uncertain terms states she is not happy, she is eating her cereal and she "hates" her and will be "telling mom" As I learn all of this Kaitlyn is sliding down into her seat in the van.... OUCH! I get off the phone and inform Kaitlyn, no more breakfast at school...they have moved the bus pick up and she has ample time to eat at home so no eating breakfast at school... Lips squeezed together, eyes tight she simply says OK MOM. Steven and Kaitlyn are dropped at school which is next door to the high school we are Having the IEP at.

IEP: Well, this was not your classic, nor one you would want to use as a model or even really tell much about.. Jessica has been out of public school 7 years, has not been tested for any clear direction for us to use in about the same, no speech & language reports or OT... we signed for lots of testing to take place over the next 6 months and then hold another IEP. The focus is TRANSITION the mind set is not as I would see it but one day at a time. I have some homework to get done to see if this is a title one school...are high school even able to be title 1?? All new because Cape Coral has never had Title 1 schools and now with the economy we have some...

Wed Sept 2nd
The kids bus came closer to 8am... yeah they are tightening the schedule!!
My dear friend Gail emailed today, sure made me feel good. We have been emailing to "catch up" throughout the day.
No check in the mail----Well this is pushing it, I am to get on a plane tomorrow with the contract work funds I did back in April to attend a class reunion (30 years) I thought I planned it out..... I thought all the T's were crossed, i 's dotted.. PROCESSING I will just die if it come SATURDAY! Well tomorrow is Jessica's IEP to get back into High School and I need to focus on preparing for her goals.

Tuesday Sept 1st
I am up and out early; put Steven and Kaitlynn the bus, shower, Emma dressed, to the bank, to the food store where I get great dry good prices, over to pay the water and gas up the van. Whew and it is just about 9:30 am...OUCH! this makes me really feel the ride to school for Steven and Kaitlyn. They got on the bus at 7:36 am and are ridding until 9:30 am when they arrive at school; TOO TOO LONG! I need to send some messages to transportation to tighten up the route. I stop by walmart for some additional items to "stock up" for possibly being gone to Illinois... I am getting edgy as I have some funds due to be in and they are not... It seems if a check was in processing three weeks ago in the year 2009 it would be here... I am thinking they must cut their own trees, make their own paper and print their own checks.. I need to ease up on the time it takes to get through processing..... PLEASE! "checks in the mail" Connie and I went to lunch, got some fresh veggies and took some girl time with Jessica.

Monday Aug 31st
Kids are in school and today is a productive day, I have tons to do to be gone on the weekend... not sure it is coming together and that is worrisome. Today it is laundry, house keeping.
